How do you get started? May 2006

  Dear Nigel,

I was talking to a friend the other day about company acquisitions. We talked about the success of completing a transaction. And then I added, "Once it is bought, then the work really starts"!

Do we ever complete or conclude? Or do we just complete one step on the way - to open up a new chapter?

Does not one thing lead to another; as the saying goes?

If there is a sequence or a thread, are you aware of it?
And did you create the steps and the direction they go in?

How would you like to be walking through life, one step after another, knowing your direction and what your "destination" is?

Destination gets the "" because you can always see that there is something ahead: the journey never ends: there are just milestones on the way.

Getting started

I can remember playing Monopoly as a boy. There was always so much excitement about buying a house , then another. And then finally being able to buy a red hotel. Do you remember?

This doing-great-things is so exciting when you are young.
It is not the game, it is the attitude towards life that is the key.
Do you have a current game-plan: one that really excites you?
Has your work really started?
Or are you waiting to conclude the transaction? What still has to happen?

How do you get started?
In Monopoly you may start with a preference for the yellow or the purple properties in which case you go for them. You may find that you land on one colour, then you try to get another of the same colour and then build the set.
Is that how we play at life too?

It is the attitude that matters – the desire to play – to experience fully playing the game – to build/grow/expand.

Am I talking about business life or life in general? Yes, you know me – I am a One-life guy!

Look at how I got involved in personal development. I was looking for a way to change my life. I went to one workshop which led me to the next and then another and another.
At a certain point the question pops out: “What else needs to happen before the work can really start?”

The work starts when you get a flat piece of land ahead of you, and you can see what lies ahead. And that is when you slip down a couple of gears and step on the gas, let the juices flow and the energy surge.
“Nothing will stop me now!”
