Nigel Buxton Update
Doing the deal March 2006

  Dear Nigel,

When you are in business there is a certain satisfaction in concluding a deal.

Normally when the hand is shaken or contract is signed it is not the end: it is more like a new beginning. Something concrete has been achieved; and a new chapter begins.

This feeling of achievement and celebration is something that everyone likes and enjoys.

So, if achievement and celebration makes everyone feel good, why not do it more often?

Why not build it into the system?

When I was a trainee in London the firm had a ritual. Whenever one of the trainees passed an exam we would all go out together to celebrate. If the trainee passed the exam at the first attempt, he got a bonus from the firm and he/she had to buy the drinks!

When I was working in the Czech Republic one client would get the bottle of vodka out to celebrate each time a significant new customer was acquired – even at 9.00 am!

What is important to celebrate?
For the trainees the most important thing was to get qualified.
For the Czech company acquiring new business was central to its recovery strategy.

Did anyone say "goal"?

Achievement comes from accomplishing what you set out to do - your goal. You need the goal to create the possibility of achievement, which gives you the opportunity to celebrate.

So what are you going to plan to celebrate?

What milestones along the way are you going to paint red as "Celebration points"?

If you are a start-up company – you might celebrate the first EUR 1 million sales, and the first EUR 10 million.
If you are a mature manufacturing business – you might celebrate when productive time per machine reaches 85% (or whatever is a challenging goal for you).
If you are a service provider – you might celebrate when chargability reaches 75% (or whatever is an important goal for you).

Keep the goals out there, appreciate the efforts everyone is making to achieve, keep people wanting the next celebration - because it feels good.

Celebrate the individual, so he/she becomes an example and a role model for others.
And celebrate the team so people feel they belong and they have made an important contribution.

Doing the deal is just passing from one stage to the next.
Does doing the deal inspire you to go forward to greater things?
Maybe even more if you know there will be a great celebration when you conclude the deal.

Have you decided what you will celebrate at your work, for your career, with your family, in your leisure activities and ....... ?

Have you decided when you will celebrate your next done deals?
