You can have anything you want, BUT ....!!!

You can have anything you want, BUT ....!!!! November 2005

  Dear Nigel,

Do you believe that you can have anything that you want?

If you believe that you can have anything that you want, does that mean that you will get it?

Yes, BUT, you say?

If, or when, you decide to adopt the belief, "I have all the money I need", you will need the intention to lead that life, one of "having all the money I need". You may need some strategies to bring about the change in your life.

BUT you may find that it just does not happen. Why? Because you already hold beliefs that conflict with the new belief. "I have a lot of debt" - "My expenses are too high".

The new belief will have to be stronger than the old conflicting beliefs.

Among those old conflicting beliefs there may be also limiting beliefs: "An employee will never be rich" - "Good people are not interested in money".

Conflicting beliefs will create confusion. Limiting beliefs will sabotage your endeavours. You will never get to the moon if you believe that man cannot fly!

If you want to see what happens try introducing a new belief, say to yourself, "I can do anything I want", and see what thoughts come bubbling up, and maybe some limiting beliefs too.

Is this the same process that happens when you try to introduce a new idea in the company; you find out all the conflicting beliefs held by the team, and the limiting beliefs of the team come bubbling up?

Working in teams, exploring new possibilities, we do an important job on our "operating systems": we do an update on the beliefs we hold, as the team gets aligned.

Many of our beliefs were adopted from our preferred role models - our parents. And, as each generation evolves and has its own new culture, so the beliefs/values of each generation need to be updated too. One of the reasons for "discussion" in the family is because the different generations hold different values and beliefs.

But some of the adopted beliefs may not get updated, and this can trip you up when you go for your dreams. One belief like, "Money comes from hard work": what bubbles came up with that one?

You decide which beliefs you hold, because that is the life you want to experience.

Any BUT's?

Do you have all the useful beliefs you need to get the life you want?

Final note: I was reading a book of the wisdom of Confucius, and found a piece I would like to share:

"We may compare the superior man to an archer. When the archer fails to hit the target, he blames himself for being unskilled".

Nigel works with people in business who want to do more with less – to make a greater contribution with less effort – to be more themselves with less holding them back.
