What is stopping you? October 2005

  Dear Nigel,

An important aspect of this newsletter is to provide you, the reader, with something that is useful. As this newsletter is addressed principally to people in business, the ideas should be results-orientated, firmly connected to the ground and thought provoking!

A big issue is always growth:how to do more, to improve and, of course, to maintain/improve profitability.

So let's look at how to determine what is stopping you from achieving the outcome that you want and the resources you need to achieve your outcome. This is how you can go beyond those obstacles which seem to be blocking the way:

  1. You know what is it you want (stated in the positive – not what you do not want) - the desired Outcome.
  2. What is stopping you?
  3. A limitation – define it very precisely.
  4. What do you want instead (of the limitation)?
  5. New Outcome
  6. What is stopping you?
  7. A limitation – define it very precisely.
  8. What do you want instead (of the limitation)?
  9. New Outcome.

And so on... Is it clear: if it is not, e-mail me and I will send you an example of the process.

By breaking through the limitations, as shown in this procedure, you will arrive at the point where there are no more limitations. Then it is all downhill!

Minimalization: this is a key to success.

If the pieces are small enough, you will be able to handle them.

If you look at the obstacles close enough, you will see through them. If you analyse your fears enough, you will see that there is nothing there to stop you proceeding. If you believed a way was not right for you, look carefully and you will find a way to work with it.

The issue is finding the right way for you to go, and that means right-size chunks. You will arrive at your goal by continuously making small steps in the right direction.

Working in Company, this process can be powerful to show that together there are no real limitations as to what can be achieved. It is only a question of "how" to do it. This is where encouraging creativity and innovation come into play.

To finish on a light note:

You know the thrill of going beyond yourself: doing something that you did not believe you could.

The great thing about these limitations is that it is a game we play with ourselves:

  • first we say to ourselves it is not possible;
  • then we demonstrate to ourselves that it can be done;
  • finally we tell ourselves how clever we are!

We are just pretending that it is not possible - for fun!

What are you saying is not possible?

Nigel works with people in business who want to do more with less – to make a greater contribution with less effort – to be more themself with less holding them back.
