Nigel Buxton Update
Do you believe in paradise on earth and at work? October 2005

  Dear Nigel,

What if paradise on earth did exist? What if you could just believe in the existence of paradise on earth? Then it can become something that you might decide to look for or to create. "I could create paradise, now this Buxton chappy is going too far"- do I hear you saying?.

Why not play with what you imagine paradise might look like, what it might feel like, what it might sound like, what it might taste like (maybe we already know that one!) and, why not, what it might smell like.

And what would you be doing in paradise!?

When I was studying meditation (as a scientific technique) I learnt to watch for the moments of meditation. They came, at first rarely, between my world collapsing around me and my anger and frustration screaming to get out of my body. And slowly by putting more attention on the quiet rather than the thunder, the moments of meditation grew.

How to bring this technique into our work?

Try focusing on the moments that are positively charged – the moments of success, elation, happiness, connection with the members of the team, contentment and of being at peace with yourself. And doing something that will create the kind of moments you want: start with something managable.

With a little practice you will notice that with a smile (even to yourself) you will create a world that smiles with you. Try it – smile and the whole world smiles with you. You will feel good with yourself and your world.

Are you smiling because the world is smiling at you, or are you smiling at the world? Become the creator.

People here in Slovenia makes joke with me when it is raining that, as an Englishman, I must feel at home! Just as the weather outside is not always sunny, so the weather inside (how we feel) is not always so good. The important thing is to recognize that it is just the weather, and get on with life. When it rains we pull out the umbrella and get on. When we feel sad, down, frustrated; pull out the "umbrella" and get on! It does stop raining, even in England: winter does give way to spring.

It is difficult to forget the natural disasters that have devastated the world in recent times - the hurricanes and earthquakes. In companies other disasters like fires can have a similarly devastating effect. We are put to the test. Do we have enough faith in ourselves and enough will to rebuild and to continue our mission?

I heard a self-development teacher say recently that it is a great goal for anyone to become a millionaire. It is not about money, the reason is because to be a millionaire you have to become a millionaire - the personality with the right mindset, and you have to build the skills. Skills that will make you stronger, operate effectively in the world and manage yourself and others. Then if you do lose all your money/wealth, you have the knowledge and confidence to be able to build it all over again.

Do you have faith in yourself to handle life?

How long are you going to let go by before you decide to create another moment of paradise?

Nigel works with people in business who want to do more with less – to make a greater contribution with less effort – to be more themselves with less holding them back.
